So you’ve decided to start a blog. You’re excited to get going, you’re ready to share your expertise & knowledge, grow your network of relationships, and increase your online visibility. Bring it on. But where do you start? What do you write about in your first post, and how do you make it good?
Recently one of my clients asked me if writing a Welcome Post for their new blog was a good idea. There are no rules here, whether you should or should not, and you’re welcome to address your first post as you choose and be as creative as you want. In general, the answer is Yes! A Welcome Post is a great idea!
What should be included?
Who are you? Introduce yourself. Provide a little history. The more information you are willing to share, the easier it will be for readers trust you.
Why are you doing this? Why are you blogging and what do you want to accomplish? Another way to think about this is to ask yourself ‘What’s in it for the reader?’
What will you be blogging about? Tell readers about the content on your blog so that the they know what to expect when then arrive. Talk about the subject(s) that will be covered, along with reasons why they should read your blog. How is your blog different from all the rest? What benefits can they expect from reading it?
Can the readers leave feedback? Tell the reader how to be involved in the conversation. Can they leave comments? Do you encourage comments? What if they want to email you? Don’t be afraid to encourage feedback, and even contrary opinions. Make sure that feedback is appreciated, and encouraged. If possible, give readers ways to contact you online and offline, for example you may link to your contact form and provide other contact information.
Close with a call to action. Invite readers to read, get involved in the discussion, subscribe, and come back for more.
