Goals are an important part of blogging. They help keep you focused and remind you why you wanted to start blogging in the first place. When I first started blogging, I thought it was supposed to be a whimsical process, where I wrote when I was inspired. That worked for the first year or so. I actually made it my thing to blog every Sunday.

Well, then life got busy, and blogging got pushed to the side a bit. It started with posting getting pushed to every other week, then to once per month, then to when I got lucky. Why did this happen? It all started out so well.

The main issue, I did not have any goals to fall back on when life got busy. There was no focus to my process, no reminder as to why I started my blog in the first place.

And now that I know what is needed to get me back on track, it is time to set some goals.

How do I go about setting goals?

Well, think of those lovely goals you have to set for work, those “SMART” goals. Funny enough, those work well in the blog setting as well.

Why? Because SMART goals are measurable and direct. They are also easy to update as things change in life and your blog.

And when I say SMART goals, I mean goals that are:

S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Action-Oriented
R = Relavent
T= Trackable

When setting blog goals, it is also important to have both short-term and long-term goals. The short-term goals help build up to the long-term goals, and will keep you on track.

Now is the time to re-evaluate your blog goals (or set a few). Don’t leave your blog to chance! Keep yourself focused, you will find it leads to a more successful and fulfilling experience in the end.

A great read on goal setting can be found on the Mind Tools site. I found it helpful and a nice reminder on how to go about setting goals.

Good luck and happy blogging!
